Dining: more options than you think
- Main Dining Room (MDR): Free, multiple courses, full menu. Either traditional fixed time and table, or freestyle “eat when you want.” This is where you’ll spend most dinners.
- Buffet: Free, casual, open most of the day. Great for breakfast and lunch.
- Specialty restaurants: Italian, steakhouse, sushi, French, hibachi. $30-$80 cover charge per person. Worth it 1-2 nights of a 7-day cruise.
- Room service: Free continental breakfast on most lines. Some lines now charge $5-$10 for full menu service.
- Casual quick-service: Pool grill, pizza window, deli, ice cream — all free, all open most of the day.
Port days: cruise-line vs independent
Two ways to do port days. Cruise-line shore excursions book through the cruise line, depart from a designated pier, are guaranteed to return before sailaway (the ship will not leave without you). They cost more but the safety net is real. Independent excursions — book directly with a local operator or DIY — are typically 30-50% cheaper but the cruise line will not wait for you.
For first-timers we recommend cruise-line excursions on at least the more remote ports. Once you’ve done a cruise or two and know how the day flows, independent makes economic sense.
The unspoken etiquette you’ll figure out by day 2
- Don’t reserve pool chairs by laying a towel down at 6am — this is the cruise version of leaving a Frisbee on a parking spot.
- Tip your cabin steward at the end of the cruise (auto-gratuity covers the basics; an extra $20-50 if they’ve been great).
- The MDR is more enjoyable if you book a small shared table for 6-8 (you’ll meet people every night). Solo travelers especially benefit from this.
- Beware the “art auction” — usually a high-pressure sales event with framed prints; almost never a good deal.
- If something on the ship isn’t working (loud cabin neighbor, AC, plumbing), tell guest services right away — the earlier you flag it the more they can do.
Disembarkation: don’t book an early flight
The single biggest first-cruiser mistake is booking a flight home that’s too early. Most cruise lines run staggered disembarkation between 7am and 10am. Even with self-walk-off and TSA Pre, you’ll typically clear the terminal between 8 and 11. Add transfer time to the airport, security lines, gate-arrival buffer — book a flight no earlier than noon on disembarkation day from Florida ports, 1pm from less-direct ports.
Better yet: book a post-cruise hotel night and fly home the next day. Decompress, do laundry, have one more dinner that wasn’t on a ship.

Embarkation typically opens around 11am-1pm depending on the line. Drop your bags, breeze through check-in (most lines have an app for it now), get on board, drop your stuff in your cabin (or grab lunch on the buffet deck if cabins aren’t ready until 1-2pm). The mandatory safety drill happens before sailaway. Then sailaway party on the pool deck. Day 1 is the longest day of the cruise.
Q2When do I see other LGBTQ+ travelers on board?
The first organic LGBTQ+ social moment is usually the daily “Friends of Dorothy” meetup at 5-6pm on day 1 — in a quiet bar listed in the daily planner. Show up, get a drink, you’ll meet people. After that, you’ll start recognizing faces all week.
Q3Do I need to dress up?
Most major lines have moved away from formal nights. Even on lines that still have them (Cunard, Holland America), they’re typically “Cruise Elegant” not black-tie — collared shirt and chinos work. Smart-casual is fine for dinner every other night. Day-time and pool deck: total casual.

Two general models. Traditional dining (Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Princess) assigns you a table and dinner time for the whole cruise. Freestyle (Norwegian, Virgin Voyages, Celebrity) lets you eat any time, any restaurant. Plus the buffet is open most of the day for casual meals. On most modern ocean ships in normal conditions, motion is minimal. Mid-ship, mid-deck cabins are most stable. Patches (scopolamine) and Bonine (meclizine) work well if you’re prone to motion sickness; bring some just in case. Caribbean is calmer than the Pacific or Bering Sea.

Yes — most lines now have shipwide Starlink internet. Speeds are decent for messaging, social media, and basic browsing. Streaming gets dicey on most plans. Wi-Fi packages run $90-$200 per person for a 7-day cruise.
Q8What about gratuities?
Most cruise lines auto-charge $14-$20 per person per day in gratuities to your shipboard account. You can prepay these before the cruise to avoid a surprise bill at the end. Specialty restaurants and bar tabs include an automatic 18-20% gratuity on top.
Q9Do I need to bring cash?
Almost not at all. Everything on board is charged to your shipboard account (linked to your credit card). You’ll want some small US dollars for tipping porters at embarkation/disembarkation, and local currency for taxis or vendors at non-USD ports.
Q10What is disembarkation like?
Most lines now use “walk-off” zones — you choose what time you want to leave the ship, get a colored luggage tag, set your bags out the night before, and walk off when your zone is called the next morning. Plan for 7-10am disembarkation and a relaxed flight time after lunch — never book a flight before noon on disembarkation day.
